Mark Colenburg

Mark Colenburg is a name some of you may not be familiar with just yet, but that’s merely a matter of time.  Mark’s ability on the drum kit is truly outstanding, listening to him play with ‘The Robert Glasper Experiment’ you could be forgiven for thinking you are listening to state-of-the-art hip hop drum programming mixed with experimental jazz artistry, the likes of Tony Williams or Philly Joe Jones.

Mark expertly performs complex beats that you would think could only be produced from dense programming. He does this with an ease of expression twisting and bending the time and blurring the lines between intense jazz phrasing and beat programming such as you might expect from hip hop great J Dilla. This is just one facet of Mark’s deep well of musical expression on top of this he’s also a Grammy Award Winning musician and producer.

Some of the artists Mark has performed with over the course of his career include contemporary greats Common, Q-Tip, Mos Def, Lauren Hill, Macy Grey and Kenny Garrett to mention a few.  

Mark is also an author: his ground-breaking book ‘The Beat Matrix Unlocked’ gives the student great practical insight to his progressive approach to the drum kit.

Mark will make his debut performance at this year’s AUDW in concert at 2:45pm on Saturday 25^th and in workshop at 10:45am on Sunday 26^th August.
